Making Common Cause with Sport?

There is an interesting article in today's Telegraph about the disquiet among sports bodies about what is going on within the DCMS. That echoes what I had heard informally through friends working in…Continue

As Well as Grants and Cuts - What Else is Important for Us in the Budget

So far this forum has been an amazing tool for gathering minds on funding in terms of cuts to grants available to arts organisations. So I thought it might be really useful as well to generate a…Continue

Nick Sherrard commented on Rosalind Riley, Fresh Glory's blog post Parliamentary Select Committee philanthropy session
"Watching that session it is great to get a dose of reality in the debate on arts funding (through your evidence) - the focus on large RFOs is absurd and quite dangerous. Let no-one say in future they weren't warned! It felt like there was a…"

"Sure - I think my hesitation here is that this thread was framed around online fundraising as a way of dealing with core funding cuts. If organisations fit it into their development plans that way I think they'll be disappointed. On the…"

Nick Sherrard replied to Alex Morrison's discussion Government Cuts and Online Fundraising
"This is a really interesting thread, and I wondered whether others shared my experience of this. I really agree with Joanne that this needs to be looked at as part of a wider audience building and marketing agenda. The slideshare Alex points to is…"

"This is such an exciting project! Really fascinating to see all the different ideas developed throughout. One thing that I was interested in was how you defined who or what your audiences were? And as a result of that, whether some take precedence…"

#artsfunding: It's time to talk at Phoenix Artists Club

November 10, 2010 from 6:30pm to 9:30pm
Following last week's Spending Review, and all the months of speculation and planning which preceded it, it's time we got together to discuss the issues in detail, share our thoughts, brainstorm and more.

Nick Sherrard commented on Jack J Hutchinson's blog post ACE faces heavy criticism from Select Committee
"This is a great write-up of proceedings - based on the sections I saw at least it was a pretty uncomfortable day for ACE. I am a little worried by the blurred lines between the discussion of the effectiveness of the Arts Council and the discussion…"

The CBI and Creative Industries

I just came across this report from the CBI on their views as to what the government needs to do to support the creative industries. Clearly this is only one aspect to the wider cultural life we need to support but I have found this a useful tool today even in explaining to people from outside the sector about the wider creative ecology we need to protect.

A link to the report is here;…

Bad Cuts, and Badly Made Cuts

At the end of a big day for culture it seems that Hunt has managed quite a feat of presentation. The news is big but the policy is half-baked, and hardly lives up to the standards of transparency held up by this new government. We need to try to take the debate on cuts into the details and what the impacts will be on the ground.…

How much does Jeremy Hunt give to the arts?

There's an interesting article here in the Evening Standard asking how much cabinet ministers currently give to the arts?

http://jury.thisislondon.co.uk/2010/07/government-looks-overseas-to-prevent-art-attack.html

I spent a day last week talking to wealth managers and talking about getting them involved in the arts. That made me aware we really do need…

We had people working in museums, in dance, in commercial theatre, in festivals, fringe theatre, participatory arts and digital media for cultural organisations.

We discussed a whole range of issues around the current state of culture funding, the impacts of that on the actual work that…
