Culture department braces itself for redundancies of up to 50%

Up to half of all staff at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport are to be made redundant as part of the cuts programme submitted to the Treasury by the culture secretary, Jeremy Hunt.



Hunt has also proposed moving out from the well-appointed departmental headquarters in Cockspur Street, just off Trafalgar Square, with the remaining staff finding room in a different, existing government departmental building.

Arts and culture bodies in cuts appeal to Cameron

From BBC News:



The leaders of Britain's most prominent cultural bodies are to appeal directly to the prime minister not to cause irreparable damage to the arts.

The coalition government has asked all major arts funding bodies to show how they would manage cuts of 25% or 30%.

Culture minister Ed Vaizey has said everybody has to take their share of cuts.

Arts Council England will join organisations like the National Theatre and Tate to make the appeal later.
